What a wonderful man! I sincerely hope that his family rely on the loving memories to help them to smile, and know that the God of all comfort will help them to endure the heartache and sorrow through the promise he has given. (Psalms 34:17,18; Philippians 4:6,7)
God promises to soon bring you the joy of seeing Phil resurrected to live again on his new paradise earth, where no one will EVER experience death or pain and suffering again. (John 5: 28,29, 6:40,44; Revelation 21:1-4)

To the family of Phil Pepe - on behalf of my Mom and Dad (Bob and Jane Wolff), and myself, I just wanted to send along our sincere condolences as well as salute what a wonderful life Phil had.
In many ways, on a personal level, I owe my career in book publishing to Phil. It was he who, when I was writing letters home from my years in the minor leagues, thought my notes would make for a good book. One thing led to another, and thanks to Phil, WHAT'S A NICE HARVARD BOY LIKE YOU DOING IN THE BUSHES? was published by Prentice-Hall.
I had so much fun writing that book and enjoying the publishing process that when my playing days came to an end, I started in book publishing. And I'm happy to report that I've been publishing books for close to 40 years now.
My Dad, of course, has all sorts of amazing stories about Phil and how their lives intersected throughout the years in the world of baseball. All in all, Phil was a major influence on my life, and for that, I'll always be grateful.
Jackie Robinson once said that a life is only important in how one influences the lives of others. That certainly applied in my case --- many thanks Phil! Rick Wolf

My condolences are extended to the entire Pepe family. I knew Phil for many years as a sportswriter and attended the BBWAA dinner since 1988. He was one of the best sportswriters and finest people that I knew. I recently spoke to him to help him with his new computer at his home. We also reminisced about sports in general and about the Mets unexpected rise to the World Series. It was so unexpected to hear about the news.
I will miss Phil both as a friend and someone I can talk to about sports. When I attend this year's dinner I will always think of Phil. Rest in Peace Phil!!

To the entire Pepe Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have very fond memories of Phil (Mr. Pepe to me). Dave and I are fraternity brothers, and we have known each other for 35 years. I'm a little older than Dave, so I graduated Rutgers three years before him. In 1984, when Phil was covering the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, I stayed in his apartment, while working at my first job. I was simply fascinated in reading all of Phil's work, as well as the work of others that he admired. It was an incredible collection of sports (and life) history that made each day so interesting.
I also remember how much Phil loved mustard -- when I went to work for Nabisco, I made sure that he always had a steady supply of Grey Poupon nearby!
Finally, my favorite book as a kid was Winners Never Quit -- I couldn't believe that I would actually meet the author years later and be able to share my thoughts on the book with him. It helped shape my thoughts about business and life...
A wonderful man that lived a very engaging and interesting life. Condolences to the family, and I wish them all a holiday season of good memories...
Joe

Phil was so warm, kind, joyous, an amazing mix of world-class talent, incredible experience, and a down-home personality - and he loved music and jazz almost as passionately as he did baseball! I was blessed to know him on many nights at Skylands Park when I was playing anthems for the NJ Cardinals; he attended many Jazz Room concerts at William Paterson University where I lead the jazz program. Nobody at WP will ever forget his fantastic onstage interview of Bernie Williams. I'll never forget him as a friend who lived in both the worlds of music and sports. Phil's generosity, kindness, and joyous outlook on life is a model for all of us.

Phil was a great reporter , sportscaster and author. And the way he chaired the BBWA dinner each year in NYC was pure genius. We pray for his family, friends and his fellow sportswriters.

First, I am deeply saddened by Philip's passing. However, my memories of him will make me smile for the rest of my life. He was close with his cousins, Buster (my Dad), Mike and Butch, and their families as well. He took my brothers Joseph and Anthony to ball games (I was too young). I remember the whole family coming together at Aunt Lilly and Uncle Mike's house at Christmas time, we would eat, tell stories and laugh for what seemed like days. I cannot think of a time when there wasn't a smile on his face, and that is how I will remember Philip.

I had the privilege of working with Phil during the mid to late 70's at UA-Columbia Cable TV in Northern New Jersey. We produced a weekly sports call-in show called Inside Sports, featuring many local and national sports figures. Although we were seen in no more than 10,000 homes, each week our work ethic resembled that of a network broadcast. The running joke between Phil and myself was that if the guest cancelled, one of us would call boxing promoter Lou Duva to be the fill-in guest! We also produced a documentary about Muhammad Ali, a friend of Phil's, for which we won an Ace Award (the cable TV equivalent back then of an Emmy). It's ironic that we both ended up working at CBS, where we would have the occasional chat about the "good old days at the cable station". My condolences to his family. It was an honor and privilege to work with him and call him my friend.
