I am still thinking about Desi and the enormous impact he had on my life... professionally, yes, I was his secretary for 10 of my very formative years. But more importantly, personally. I will be forever grateful for his guidance, wisdom, generosity, understanding, forgiveness, trust and just plain common sense and kindness. He was a great attorney, but a greater mentor, an outstanding person, and an all around cool guy. His quick Irish wit, a wink here and a grin there.. priceless. It was a privilege and an honor to know Desi. May his family take comfort in knowing he is loved and respected and will be remembered fondly for years and years to come. RIP D-Man.

I met Mr. Massey just once, through a colleague at work. I was much impressed. What a marvelous human being, very unique and blessed to have such a wonderful family. I'm sure he will be missed by all. The video tribute was wonderful and in watching it, I felt as though I'd known him a life time. May he rest in peace and heartfelt condolences to the Massey family.

I have known Desi for almost 35 years. I was an associate at Grotta Glassman and Hoffman early in my career and he was an amazing mentor for me. He taught me that the most important thing in labor negotiations and in any litigation was that the Union must trust you and know that when you presented your position, you were being honest with them and that they could take your word to the bank. When I became an in-house attorney, I always went to Desi to represent the companies for which I worked because I knew that he was the best in the field and would never steer us wrong. He was an amazing person, an amazing attorney and truly an amazing friend. He will be missed by all that knew him and learned from him. I will always remember him. He was such a special Desi. I send my love, deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to Desi's entire family and friends.

My condolences to Tara & Sandy and their families. Your father was truly a great man. I have known him for over 20 years and I got the privilege to work with him the last few years. They were the best years for me. We had lots of talks and laughs along the way. He was so caring and generous. He lived life to the fulliest and encouraged others to do the same. He loved his family so very much. You all brought so much joy to his life. He will be missed dearly. Especially by me.

I remember the day when Harold Grotta suggested to me that we should consider hiring as he put it, "this Irish guy who's a State Mediator and used to be a waiter at the 744." What an introduction for a potential Associate. Well, we took a chance on him and it could not have turned out better for the firm. Desi was the embodiment of the self made man. His life story resonated throughout the profession and the business community. He rose to the highest levels of management side labor lawyers. His skills at the bargaining table earned him the respect of his clients, colleagues and adversaries. He will be missed. Joan and I wish to express our deepest condolences to Desi's entire family. Take comfort in the fact that for years to come, many of us will still be telling Desi stories.

He was a master in all aspects of his life, including his service to others...whether they were highly-educated and wealthy to those who were struggling for monies to obtain a high school diploma. A very classy man.

I met Desi when I started working with Grotta Glassman over 20 years ago. He was one of the most energetic people I ever met -- always full of life and always on the go. But, whenever he was in the Jersey office, he made time to sit down and enjoy conversation with the staff. He could be tough when he had to be, but he was also kind and generous and there was no doubt that he loved his daughters and grandchildren. Yes, Desi was "special" and those of us who got to know him will miss his Irish spirit.

Tara, what a special man your father was. I have worked with your dad for almost 3 years, but the little time I have spent with him were always so enjoyable. I would always look forward to seeing him and knowing that when he came to the office there would always be a story that came with him. Desi would always walk into the office and greet me with a big hello and the sweetest smile. I use to love to watch your dad in action or just listen to his stern but confident words. He was a man with so much talent and was loved by so many people. I pray that God hold each and everyone one of you close to his heart and gives you the strength you all need to get through this difficult time. God Bless

My deepest condolences to Desi's beloved family. Desi will always be in my thoughts and prayers. He was an amazing man, a character to always be remembered. Desi helped shape my career as a labor lawyer and I will always remember the fun we had negotiating the State's correctional officers' unions contracts. Desi always made learning fun, whether at the negotiating table, on a strike site or in the library.
Enjoy being with you adored parents and siblings. God speed Desi. "And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand."
With love and respect,
Beth

Sandy and Tara- I had the pleasure of being your dad's partner for over 40 years. To say that he was "one of a kind" would be an understatement. Desi was the consummate labor negotiator. He never forgot his roots- Dublin and the union movement. He was respected by all who knew him. When things got heated in a negotiation , Desi calmed things down with a story (man did he have stories). He was always on a plane, usually leaving Monday for Vegas, then California and maybe Kentucky. When he was in town and came to the office he would always stop by to say hello. Desi's hellos usually lasted 1 hour since he loved to reminisce. He loved you girls and you and the grandkids were always in his stories. There is not enough space to relate 40 years of "Desiism's". He will be greatly missed by all of the Grotta , Glassman and Hoffman colleagues, he came in contact with. Every one has a Desi story to tell. May you find comfort in knowing you had a very "special" Dad. My sympathies to you and your family. Harold Hoffman
