EMIL R. SCHNELL
1931 – 2018
Emil was born in Irvington, NJ, and from age nine he lived in Bayside, NY. He attended Brooklyn Tech High School where he played football and baseball. In his senior year he played on an all-star baseball team at the Polo Grounds and was later recruited by the NY Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers, but chose instead to attend Dartmouth College where he continued playing these sports. During college he was a member of the ROTC and after graduation he spent two years in the Marines.
Emil met his wife Lois at church while in his senior year at Dartmouth. They were married in 1956 after he was discharged from the Marines and lived in the NY area for four years where they had two sons, Rich and Rob. Emil was then transferred with Western Electric to Chicago, IL where they had a daughter, Lauren, and another son, Eric.
They lived in IL for eight years, transferred to Nashville, TN for a year, transferred back to IL for another seven, Berkley Heights, NJ for three, then Greensboro, NC for eleven. He retired to FL where they lived for twenty-three years before settling at Crane's Mill Retirement Community in West Caldwell, NJ in November 2014.
Emil loved to spend time with his family, entertaining friends with Lois, working on projects in his workshop and writing poetry. Emil was a Hospice volunteer for many years and a Stephen Minister with his church in NC.
He is survived by his wife Lois of 62 years and his family: son Rich, and spouse PC; daughter Lauren, spouse Doug, and their children Brandon and Tyler; and son Eric, and spouse Susan.
