Obituary of Dorothy Marie Shadel

Dorothy Marie Shadel Devout Lutheran Devoted Wife, Mother & Grandmother Dorothy Marie Shadel (nee Tschudy), 89, of West Caldwell, NJ, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014, at LTACH Columbus Hospital, Newark, NJ, surrounded by her family. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family at the Codey & Jones Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Avenue, Caldwell, NJ 07006 (973-226-6696) on Thursday, July 10th from 4-8 pm. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 23 S. Prospect Avenue, Verona, NJ 07044 on Friday, July 11th at 11:00 am. The interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell Dorothy was born on September 15, 1924, and grew up in Lebanon, PA. She was extremely proud of her "Pennsylvania Dutch" heritage. In 1948, she married Charles E. Shadel and moved to NJ where together they raised their family in West Caldwell. She was very devoted in her faith and was an active member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, participating in the Choir, Altar Guild, LWML, Sunday School, and Calvary Crafters. Dorothy enjoyed gardening and baking, especially Christmas cookies. Her love of flowers inspired many trips to gardens around the country, visiting relatives along the way. She also had a wonderful love of music. She was well-admired for her skill in playing Scrabble. She was predeceased by her husband, of 62 years, Charles Edward Shadel in 2010; her mother, Hilda; sisters, Pearle and Hilda; and a brother, John. Surviving are her devoted daughters, Susan Jeanne Smith, and her husband Robert, of La Mesa, CA and Nancy Marie Keltner, and her husband, William, of West Caldwell; 4 loving grandchildren Tyler, Kevin, Molly and Brian; and many nieces and nephews.
