Just became aware of Joey's death. We bonded early our freshman year at the College of Forestry (Syracuse). Students were assigned class sections alphabetically so we were together in most classes, often in adjacent seats. Sharing a New Jersey sense of humor and the talent for ridiculing the absurd, I was immediately drawn to Joey following some of his "hushed" out-loud commentary. I still remember him standing at attention daily at noon in his dormitory saluting as the national anthem played, struggling to hold back a grin as we lambasted him. We were cabin mates in at the Cranberry Lake 10-week summer program between freshman and sophomore years. Myself, Langie, and Neal posed as the mountain men we hoped to be while the ever clean and manicured Joey reminded us we should brush our teeth multiple times daily!

Dear Jesse and family:
We are very sorry to read about your Dad’s passing. Sadly, we lost Mom the week before. We share in your grief.
Myself and my brothers have many fond memories of your father. Growing up in the Caldwells and playing sports, he was always present and quick to flash that smile.
In later years, our paths crossed often at Essex Fells CC. Your Dad was kind and generous to all he met. He was a favorite in the caddie yard, which speaks volumes. And for the O’Reilly boys, there was always time to chat and catch up.
Your Dad and family is in our thoughts and prayers.

I first met Joe in Syracuse where we worked for a city-county planning agency. I was so impressed with his professionalism...his presentations to the County Legislature were epic. He was the first visitor we had when my wife and I moved to Colorado where I attended graduate school. In the years since, he and I maintained contact, but an in-person meeting was rare and this I deeply regret. What a great guy! His memory will be with me forever. With deepest sympathy for his family, I wish them all the best going forward.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the Martin Family. I had the honor to know Joe during the time I was County Executive of Bergen County. Joe was a source of great advice and knowledge for myself and members of the administration. From my work with Joe, I came to know him as a man of great faith and dedication. I followed his career in Essex County and admired his dedication to public service. A very proud family man, he will truly be missed. Rest In Peace, Joe.

Martin Family, we are very sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Martin. He was a true gentleman and would always greet me with a firm handshake and a smile. He always enjoyed talking Syracuse sports, Army Black Knights football, golf, and hearing about all of the various sports Jesse and I played in the Caldwell community. His home was always open to friends whether it be for a sleepover or just stopping in after playing baseball at Francisco Park. Rest in peace Mr. Martin. - Marc, Nacole and Lilla Zeevalk
