We live in Lavallette. We attended the dedication festivities at the playground in memory of Brendan.
In August of 2018 my younger sister passed away. She loved Lavallette. We wanted to do something in her memory. I learned that swings were not installed at the playground. Perfect! My sister was a kindergarten teacher and loved kids. We collected money from family and friends and made the swings possible. We met Mr Tevlin when the swings were installed. He was so happy to have swings at the playground. First time meeting him. What a lovely, generous, friendly, nice man. He invited us to breakfast. We enjoyed his company and a few members of the family. REST in Peace Mr T. with your sweet Caroline.

The world is a better place because Tom Tevlin was in it. He touched so many people and made a difference in the lives of many. I will always remember Tom as my late husband, Bob Cogan’s, dearest friend and confidant. He supported my family long after my husband’s death. He was truly an inspirational man and a leader among his peers. Tom was someone who provided guidance and support to anyone in need with compassion, faith and respect. He will forever be remembered as a pillar of his community and a joy to all who knew and loved him.

My most sincere condolences to Tom's family and friends. I've only known Tom for a few years through FMBA meetings, and, having the honor of building Brendan's playground. We became friendly with each other very quickly and I always had a good time just talking with him. Rest in peace Tom.

Mr. Tevlin -- we could just never call him Tom! -- was a one of a kind. My family began renting the back house at President Avenue in 1995. We quickly felt like family. We would arrive each summer to a refrigerator stocked with cold drinks and a handwritten note encouraging us to enjoy. Once I was on my own with the kids I knew I couldn't afford the two week minimum stay. The Tevlins allowed me to just rent for a week and so our tradition continued. Generous, loving, curious, funny... While it is a loss that he is gone, the fact that Mr. Tevlin lived and loved for so long, and touched so very many people, is a real gift. We feel so blessed to have been even the smallest part of his very large life. God has blessed him, and we all know where he is! Love and peace to all who are mourning. -Katie Singer, Kayla and Jake Ephros

Tom and Carolyn were Lavallette neighbors for almost 20 years. Mary and I watched the grandchildren grow up on our shared street, President Ave. We were always enlightened to see Tom, Carolyn and the Tevlin crew enjoying life. Seeing Tom riding by on his bicycle ringing his bell, always a smile and a greeting. The Crabs Claw singing with multiple wigs, so much fun. Thank goodness we got to know such a nice man and his family.
Love; Mike and Mary Motsay

My name is Beverly Foster and I knew Tom in my position as the director of the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation.. I'd known your Dad for many years. He was a lovely lovely man. I had a chuckle reading his obit as I was a recipient of one of his DD gift cards when I retired from SBBF! It was accompanied with a warmly written note. Will always remember him with fond memories. I know he will be missed. My deepest condolences. Beverly

We would like to thank the Tevlin family for sharing this celebration of life for Tom. We have so many great lifelong memories as Cookie started her journey with Carolyn in Kindergarten and I entered the scene in my early teen years. Being able to virtually attend this mass for Tom from Florida was a true blessing. The tributes by Patrick and Kathleen were totally awesome and memorable. The mass itself and the church were a beautiful and fitting tribute to a man of so many talents and love of life . His rendition of Sweet Caroline will be forever embedded in our memories of a great couple together through all the joys and challenges of life always with a song in their hearts. If any of you have ever been to Fenway Park to a Red Sox game and you shared with a crowd of fifty thousand fans their rendition of Sweet Caroline that they all belt out at all their games you will have an appreciation of what that song means in the memory of our Carolyn. God bless Carolyn, Tom and the entire Tevlin family and thank you for sharing your life with us .

Condolences to the entire Tevlin family. Tom was a true gentleman and a good friend. I had the pleasure of working with Tom as a young firefighter. He became my lieutenant early on and taught me a lot about the fire department and the FMBA. One of Tom's regular training videos included his karaoke videos (mostly from his cruises). There were many songs in Tom's repertoire, like "Elvira", however, none of them could come close to the now famous rendition of "Sweet Caroline" - a heartfelt tribute to his wonderful wife, Carolyn. Tom was one of the strongest advocates of the fire service until the end. He taught me a lot about the union and how to advocate for my peers. I am forever grateful for that. God bless Tom and the entire Tevlin family always.

I can remember seeing him when the mtgs were open and consciously thinking- go hug him incase it’s the last time. I remember he seemed surprised at how wholehearted and lovingly I hugged him. Somehow I knew it was the next right thing to do. I aim grateful to have the memory to cherish. Just like all the others and the dunkin donut cards .. year after year accompanying the hugs, smiles and words of congratulations. Visiting him at Green Hill, praying for his recovery and more time with him. Covid cheated us of receiving anymore hugs but his words and spirit were felt on zoom. I will miss him deeply, my AA dad, Have a Great 24:)

I was so sorry to hear about Tom’s passing. I had the good fortune of meeting him at the Caldwell Community Center. He would always come up after his work out, stop at the front desk or pop into my office and sing a song before stopping to chat. Tom had the unique ability to make you feel like you were the only person in the room and that he was genuinely interested in what you had to say. I am eternally grateful to have met Tom and to have had him as a friend.
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

From Jeff Findle:
My sincere condolences to you and your entire family.
When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.
I met Thomas J. Tevlin at the wedding of my oldest son Jason Kyle Findle to his grand daughter Colleen Marie Dolan here in Cary North Carolina.
He certainly was a presence at that wedding - leading and singing an Irish Blessing with microphone in hand. We also saw him talking to my late father, James P. Findle at the bar of Doherty’s Irish Pub afterwards.
I have heard several accounts of this fine man from the Dolan family and I must say that what I saw and heard at the wedding, he certainly lived up to the wonderful reputation that his family has bestowed upon him. I was planning to travel up to NJ and get to know him and the rest of the Tevlins better as time permitted.
My sincere thoughts and prayers are with your entire family. God Bless Thomas J. Tevlin.

I wrote before to the family, but I also want to say to the Tevlin boys- Thank you for being there at so many friends' and family members' funerals and graveside services playing the beloved bagpipes. The most recent being just last week at our father's funeral. It is always so special and such a comfort to have you there. I am so sorry I can not be with you at your dad's funeral, as we are taking our youngest back to college. I am sure it is going to be a beautiful celebration of his life and that he will be welcomed into the kingdom in the midst of Irish melody. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. He sure did live a full life with his family always at the center of it! Memories came flooding back of me standing with Mr. and Mrs. Tevlin, along with Mr. and Mrs. Denvir, in front of Sacred Heart Church in Vailsburg on parade day waiting for The Peter Smith School of Irish Dancers to perform. Both sets of parents were so proud of their children marching in the Newark Parade back then! Of course over the years, we always met them back at Cryan's to continue the celebration. I remember Mr. Tevlin's smile and welcoming demeanor. What a blessing he must have been for so many friend's of Bill W. That's such a gift to help others through their struggles- THANK YOU Mr. Tevlin for that! May all his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren know that we are holding you in our hearts and surrounding you with love as you say goodbye to this special man. He will remain alive in all of you and through your memories. Much love, Colleen (Mattheiss) Murphy and family
