Obituary of Joan Mooney

Joan Mooney, 92, formerly of Caldwell, NJ passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Joan was born in May 1931 to William and Helen (Smith) Peters in Glen Ridge. She grew up in Newark, graduating from Barringer High School. Joan went on to work at Dugan's Bakery and the Tung-Sol factory.

She married Thomas Mooney in 1959 and lived in Caldwell. Joan was a master seamstress, doing all her sewing by hand. She made clothes for her family as well as many stuffed animals for charity. Joan also enjoyed baking cakes for the Boys Club of America and doted on her plant collection. She devoted herself to her family and they were most important to her. Joan loved being a grandmother of four and a great grandmother of one.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Thomas; and her siblings, Helen Poniken, Ruth Bradford, and Wallace Peters. She is survived by her devoted children, Lydia Zolla and her husband, Hank of Lake Hiawatha; and Thomas Mooney, Jr. and his wife, Patty of Budd Lake; her cherished grandchildren, Melissa Petrosi and her husband, Joe; Matthew Zolla and his fiance, Toni Bizzaro; Joseph Zolla; and TJ Mooney III; and her great grandson, JD Petrosi.

Visitation with her family will be Wednesday, April 3rd from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Codey Funeral Home of Caldwell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Aloysius R.C. Church on Thursday, April 4th, at 10:30am, followed by interment at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Montclair.
