Athlete, Teacher and Coach
Charles E. Martin, of West Caldwell, NJ, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017 at home. He was 82 years old.
Visitation will be at the Codey & Jones Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Ave., Caldwell, NJ 07006 on Friday, March 17 from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, March 18 at 11:00 am in St. Aloysius R.C. Church, 219 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell. Born in Verona, NJ and raised in Montclair, NJ, Charles was the son of Ellis and Mary (Dewar) Martin. He resided in West Caldwell for over 50 years.
Red graduated from Montclair HS where he excelled in football and track. On the gridiron his team went undefeated in back to back seasons. Red continued football at the University of Richmond, The US Army and at Montclair State.
Charlie graduated from Montclair State with a bachelor and master's degree in education. He began his career as a history/social studies teacher in New Providence. After 3 years he moved to the West Essex School District where he taught for 36 years before retiring in 2000. While at West Essex he coached football and track, as well as wrestling in the middle school.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary Ann; son, Michael; and sister, Eleanor Turbett. Surviving are his children, Charles, Thomas, Sharon and Brian and his wife, Melissa; sister, Jeanne Cummins; grandchildren, Anne, Sean, Evan, Austin, Autumn, McCain, Tyler and Calahan; and great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Roman.
